When my friend and fellow Catholic mom / pro-lifer / breastfeeding advocate Buding asked me to blog about their livelihood project for mothers, namely the Jesse Tree by Mano Amiga moms, I didn’t hesitate at all. Actually I was meaning to buy ourselves a kit to add to our planned Advent activities for the year.
But first, what exactly is a Jesse Tree? Here’s a brief description from Catholic Culture.org:
|Image from CatholicCulture.org|
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots: and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:1-2)
There are many ways to include the Jesse Tree in one’s Advent family traditions. Some people make their own, while others purchase ready-made ornaments. (More information about the Jesse Tree can be found here and here.)
Anyway, about the Jesse Tree by Mano Amiga moms, I’m highly recommending it for the following reasons:
1. It is a good way to “give” and “receive” – “give” because purchasing a Jesse Tree kit will help the underprivileged mothers of Mano Amiga Academy, and their families too; and “receive” because recipients and/or users of the Tree will be “equally blessed as it comes with a daily guide containing God’s Word, prayers and activity/discussion notes for the family.” (quoted from here)

2. For moms like me who don’t have the time nor talent to make handmade ornaments (though I was all set to do this! haha!), it is a perfect solution for those who still wish to have a Jesse Tree, without advanced preparations.

3. It would make a very meaningful gift for any family or individual. Also, if you already have your own Tree Kit, you can use it again for the following year(s).
4. I LOVE the story behind the project! Moms helping moms! 😉 Here is a brief write-up about it last year from Greenleaf for the Busy Soul, the official publication of the Sto. Nino de Paz community of Greenbelt Chapel:
