Mapuche Araucano Culture

Detailed Information about Mapuche culture and Araucana

Indigenous ethnic groups have dwelled on the soil of Neuquén for thousands of years. Vestiges such as cave paintings and engravings made by the most ancient cultures are still preserved. The last groups to inhabit the territory of Neuquén, before the conquest, were the PUELCHES, the PEHUENCHES and the MAPUCHES.

Puelches

They were given that name by the Chilean Mapuches, as it stands for ?people from the East”. Grouped in tribes ruled by a chief, they were monogamous, though the chiefs and important figures could have several wives.

They were tall and had a longish head, which they used to deform artificially on babies.
They were nomads and their food was obtained from the guanaco and the rhea, which they would hunt with bows and arrows, as well as with boleadoras. They also collected roots and seeds and prepared alcoholic beverages.

They lived in tepees made of animal skins and dressed with the quillango, a blanket made with guanaco skins whose fur they wore next to their own skin. They would decorate the outer side with geometrical drawings. They held their hair with a hair band and wore leather moccasins. They would also paint their faces according to the occasion.

As from the XVI century, the Mapuches or Araucanos started to penetrate the area coming from Chile and gradually spread all around Patagonia and the Argentinian Pampas. The Puelches mingled with them and adopted their customs and tongue.
The Mapuches also imitated the Tehuelches? lifestyle. For instance, they copied their dwellings and their nomad behavior, which let them become adapted to the new territory.

Pehuenches

The Pehuenches inhabited the area of the monkey-puzzle trees or pehuenes. They were tall and slim. Their skin was dark and they had wavy hair.

Their food was based on the monkey-puzzle tree pine-nuts which they harvested and preserved in underground silos during the winter. They used the nuts to make a kind of bread and a beverage similar to chicha. They hunted guanacos and collected wild seeds and fruit.
They used animal skins to make their dwellings and also their dresses, which they ornamented with feathers.

Little by little, after the infiltration of the Araucanos from Chile who settled down among them, they started to adopt their habits and lost almost all their primitive customs and even their physical characteristics.

Mapuches

Also called Araucanos, this nation from the Chilean territory spread all around Argentina. In the times of the colony, they occupied all the pampas territory and northern Patagonia up to a part of Santa Cruz, about 250 years ago.

This immigration gave way to an adaptation and merger process with the peoples who had settled down in this area before their arrival. This happened without any violence or displacement.
They did resist the white penetration and were moved southwards, where they offered strong resistance and started their migration to Patagonia and La Pampa.

They were small and had a short head. In Chile, they were farmers: they grew corn, potatoes, peppers, beans, pumpkins and other vegetables. When they crossed onto Argentina, they took up hunting and gathering, becoming adapted to the nomad style of life.
They lived in tepees, which they transported from one place to another. They would sleep on sheep skins.

They dressed chiripaponcho and leather boots. The women wore their hair in two long plaits and covered themselves with blankets which they tied to their waists with colorful sashes.
Their weapons included the boleadoras, which they tied around their waists, the sling and the spear, which they used against the Spanish during the conquest, especially after they started riding horses. As a defensive weapon, they also used a kind of helmet made of raw leather and a shield.

The mapuche tongue prevailed over the languages of the previous cultures.
They were polygamous. The number of wives varied according to how rich they were.
Even though the idea of a supreme being is a consequence of the Christian influence, today they hold wonderful pagan celebrations that respect their ancient beliefs. The NGUILLATUN, during which prayers are said to NGUENECHEN, the lord of the Indians, ?owner of the people?, is among the most famous. During this celebration, they perform several rites including the so-called loncomeo dance.

One of its figures was the choique purrún, in which the dancers imitated the movements of the rhea or choique.

The intervention of the machi or shaman, a kind of medic or sorceress, was essential. She was in charge of healing using herbs and other procedures such as spells, animal sacrifices and smoke puffs. The ceremony was performed on a valley, where they raised an altar they called rehue with planted poles or canes.

The colors of the nguillatún are blue (from the sky) and yellow (from the sun). Sometimes they also used green (from the grass).

Native Musical Instruments

Native Musical Instruments

The inhospitable climate and the struggle to survive in this land covered with snow for so many months give the music a sorrowful character in which passion is cruel and hopeless. Passion cannot even be expressed through weeping or love. That is the reason for the simplicity of their musical instruments and the fact that the araucano music is charged with moan and anguish.
They used several musical instruments: cultrun, trutruca, pifilca, ñorquin, quinquer-cahue, or araucano fiddle.

  • Cultrun:a drum made with a piece of hollow wood, shaped as a kettledrum. It is lined with horse skin tightly held. It is beat with only one stick whose handle is ornamented with colorful threads.
  • Pifilca:a flute made of wood or bone. It is short and sounds like a whistle. They hang it from their necks with a string. At present, it is carved in 30 to 40-centimeter wooden pieces. The lower end of the tube is closed and holes are opened to half-way its length. It gives out only one sound and this sole note is mixed throughout a song or an instrumental piece without any rhythmic or tune relation with the rest.
  • Trutruca:this instrument is made with a colihue cane with a length of up to four meters. It is cut in half in order to make it hollow. Afterwards, the two halves are tied with a wool thread and it is wrapped in horse guts. A cow horn is placed at one end and it is blown through the opposite end. Its sound resembles the bellowing of a bull and it represents the tribe?s strength. This is one of the two kinds of large aerophones existing in our country (the other one is the erke)
  • Quinquercahue:it had two arches (generally made out of rib bones) completed with only one string made of horse mane. It was played by placing one of the arches ?the body of the fiddle- against the upper incisors with the left hand. The right hand, in turn, passed the string from the other arch ?the fiddle?s arch- over the previous one, thus producing a plaintive and sorrowful sound.
  • Lolquin:similar to the trutruca but much smaller. It is made with thistle cane, called troltro.
  • Clarín:it was known upon the arrival of the Spanish and imitated with local materials (vegetable cane and wood)
  • Cullcull:it was the bugle used as an alarm in case of emergency or war. It was made with ox horns.
  • Pinquilhue:from remote times, it was a kind of flute made with the stem of the colihue
  • Caquel cultrum:it is a drum made with the hollow cut of a log.
  • Huala:a kind of maraca, made with a gourd that sounds with dry pips and sometimes small pebbles inside.
  • Cada Cada:large shells that sound by rubbing their edges and striped faces. Several of the abovementioned instruments are usually played altogether during the ritual ceremonies: nguillatunes and machitunes.

What Are the First Peoples?

A dictionary explains that the name ?first peoples? refers ethnic groups native to a geographical region or land, before the arrival of a foreign culture. However, the meaning goes much deeper and in the last few years this subject has inspired true respect. Nowadays, the first peoples in the American continent have begun to vindicate their culture, their philosophy of life and their interests within the democratic society of modern societies.

This is also evidenced in the treatment of the matter by the mass media, the political agenda of each country and a great deal of social, civil and non-governmental organizations that struggle for their rights and their inclusion in today?s world. All around our Patagonia, generations of men and women coming from this original lineage still try to preserve their inherited culture, history, traditions, visions of the world and lifestyles through their own customs and in perfect combination with the surrounding environment.

What to do if Your Teeth Are Shifting After Treatment (tips)

teeth shifting after braces, When wearing Invisalign or braces, your teeth were secured in place. During treatment, Dr makes minor adjustments that cause the teeth to shift a minuscule amount each time. Since your teeth no longer have the pressure once treatment is complete, there is a normal settling process that occurs. In some cases, these tiny shifts can actually improve the bite even more.

Additionally, your body undergoes constant change. Just as the levels of elastin and collagen in our skin decrease over time and lead to wrinkles, the structures that secure our teeth in place also experience aging. The tongue also causes normal wear and tear that can influence changes in tooth placement. That is why expecting zero tooth movement once your braces are removed is unrealistic.

Why It Happens

First things first, take a deep breath. Our teeth, our whole bodies even, are always changing. Orthodontics help to move your teeth in certain directions, but once they are no longer there to keep your teeth in specific positions, the following factors all come into play and can encourage your teeth to move:

  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Tooth grinding
  • Tooth loss

If you haven’t worn your retainers as recommended, it’s very likely that you’ll experience orthodontic relapse. Relapse refers to the tendency of teeth to move back to where they were before orthodontic treatment. Even if you don’t visibly notice that your teeth have moved, you’ll be able to tell if you experience some discomfort when you put on your retainers again after a long period of time not wearing them.

How to Correct It

teeth shifting after braces

If your teeth shift after your orthodontic treatment, you may be able to fix the shifting before it gets severe with new retainers. Sometimes, orthodontic relapse can be treated with Invisalign.

Call your Dr office as soon as you notice your teeth shifting, whether it’s right after braces or a few months/years down the line, or if your retainers no longer fit. When orthodontic relapse is ignored for too long, you might need to begin a more intensive orthodontic treatment again. You don’t want all of the time and effort you put into straightening your teeth in the first place to go to waste!

When Teeth Shifting After Braces Becomes a Concern

Although it is normal to experience some natural settling of your teeth once your treatment is complete, significant changes or shifting front teeth are cause for concern. If you believe this is happening, you should notify your Dr office immediately.

Typically, if de Dr notice unwanted shifting, a simple retainer tweak can solve the issue. If the shifting has occurred for a while, the solution may become more complicated. For instance, certain patients may need to wear a clear aligner every day for several months. More severe cases may require a second, shorter round of braces. If a patient has ignored the issue for years, treatment may need to be completely restarted.

Wearing Retainers Following Braces

While the natural settling process may still cause you to notice a slight degree of tooth shifting even if you wear your retainer, using a retainer is the best way to keep shifting to a minimum and preserve your bite. Because the majority of settling occurs immediately after treatment is completed, patients are usually recommended to wear their retainer on a full-time basis for the first few post-treatment months. Once we evaluate your teeth and approve their placement, you may be able to wear the retainer only at night. Almost all patients will need to use their retainer for their entire life. Typically, wearing the retainer a few nights each week is enough to prevent teeth from reverting to their original position. Failing to consistently wear your retainer can lead to complications in the future.

The sooner you tackle the issue of shifting teeth once your braces are removed, the sooner it can be controlled. If you are worried that your teeth are shifting beyond the natural settling process, consider contacting our practice immediately. Even if you weren’t entirely committed to wearing your retainer consistently, it is never too late to get back on track.

Tips To Prevent Your Teeth From Shifting After Braces

teeth shifting after braces

If you go through all of the time, effort and expense of getting braces, then the last thing that you want is for your teeth to shift once your braces come off. This is the last thing that Orthodontics wants as well, so they will likely do all in their power to stop this from happening.

Wear Your Retainer Regularly

The easiest way to stop your teeth from shifting after you get your braces off is to wear your retainer regularly. As soon as your braces come off, Dr may have some plastic retainers made for you from molds of your teeth. These help to keep your teeth in place while your regular retainers are created. Your plastic retainers should be worn at all times, except when you are eating or brushing your teeth.

Your regular retainers will either be fixed or removable. If your retainers are fixed in your mouth, then you won’t have to worry about wearing them because they are always there. You will also wear your removable retainer all of the time at first, but it is up to you to remember to keep it in. Over time, your orthodontist may then cut this back to just wearing your retainer at night.

Take Action If You Notice Your Teeth Are Moving

If you notice that your teeth are moving, it is important that you take action right away. Your teeth may be moving for a variety of reasons, even if you are trying to wear your retainer as you should. If your wisdom teeth come in after your braces have been removed, then this can cause all of your teeth to shift closer together. The best way to stop this from happening is to have your wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible.

Another reason why your teeth may be shifting is because your retainer no longer fits properly. This may be because you didn’t wear it enough and your teeth shifted little by little, or because it somehow became bent or damaged. If you have a permanent retainer, it is important to make sure that the wire is still in place and none of the bonds have come off of your teeth because this can also cause your teeth to move out of alignment. In any case, going into your orthodontist and having your retainer fixed, or a new retainer made, is a great way to ensure that your teeth don’t move any further.

Take Care Of Your Teeth

If you don’t take proper care of your teeth, then they are at risk of decay. This decay can eat away at your teeth and cause them to become damaged. If the shape of your tooth changes, due to decay, then the rest of your teeth may shift around it. By going in for regular checkups with your dentist, you help ensure that your teeth remain in good health, thus reducing the risk of your teeth shifting due to damage or decay.

Visiting your Orthodontics  regularly the first 6 months after getting your braces off, and then every year or so after that, can help to ensure your teeth are where they need to be as well. They will also inspect your retainer at this time and make any necessary changes.

Why do teeth move after braces?

There are many reasons why your teeth shift after you’ve worn braces. Every day your teeth are under different pressures. When you speak, your tongue repeatedly presses against your teeth. When you chew, your teeth come under repeated pressure. Even when you smile, or when you sneeze, various muscles in your mouth and in your face move. Over time, this can have an effect on the position of your teeth.

Besides these factors, things like ageing, grinding your teeth in your sleep, and even genetics can affect the position of your teeth. Unfortunately, teeth always follow the path of least resistance, so if there is nothing holding them in place, your teeth are liable to move.

Not wearing retainer after braces

There is only one thing that can be done to stop teeth from shifting – wearing your retainer. Your orthodontist probably recommended you to wear a retainer every day for many months. After this initial period, your dentists probably told you to continue wearing it for 3 to 5 nights a week for over a year. Some dentists recommend that you should wear your retainer for several nights a week for life.

Unfortunately, for many people, it’s too late for that. There is a whole generation of people who wore metal braces in their teenage years. After the ordeal of train-tracks is over, the last thing the average teenager wants is to wear a retainer. But without wearing a retainer as recommended by your orthodontist, you can end up paying the price for years to come.

Straightening teeth with a retainer

If you still have your old retainers lying around, you might feel tempted to wear them to move your teeth back. But this is not what retainers are designed for. If your teeth have moved significantly, your old retainer will obviously be uncomfortable to wear. But more importantly, if your old retainer does not fit accurately, it may damage your teeth.

In some rare cases, your orthodontist may confirm that you can still use your old retainers. But if your teeth have moved in any significant way, they will likely recommend a new set of braces. So what should you do after an orthodontic relapse?

Get your teeth straight again with Smilelign

The good news is that if you want to get your teeth straight again, it’s easier than ever. Smilelign clear braces are almost invisible, and are perfect for realigning teeth that have moved back after braces.

You can stop your teeth from shifting after braces by wearing your retainer regularly, contacting your Orthodontics at the first sign of movement and making sure that you take care of your teeth.

Having braces tightened is a necessary step in achieving straight, healthy teeth. In order to maintain overall oral health and to avoid discomfort, you should encourage your child to follow these suggestions.

Soft foods to eat with braces at school

Soft foods to eat with braces at school

From the Cafeteria

Encourage your student to stick with soft foods that don’t require biting into. Some good choices include:

  • Soup, either creamy or with soft vegetables
  • Salads without crunchy vegetables or croutons
  • Soft, shredded chicken or beef
  • Egg or tuna salad
  • Tofu
  • Pasta
  • Meatloaf
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Soft casseroles
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soft breads or tortillas

Bringing a Lunch?

There are many great options for packing a lunch bag! Just remember to keep foods at the proper temperature, with insulated containers for hot foods and two cold sources, such as two frozen gel packs, for cold foods.

  • Sandwiches with soft filling (no chunky peanut butter!) on soft bread. Thinly sliced, easy to chew cold cuts will work, but cold cuts like salami are too chewy. Cut the crusts off if necessary. Cutting sandwich wedges into smaller portions will also make them easier to eat.
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Hummus and soft pita wedges
  • String cheese and soft crackers
  • Applesauce
  • Yogurt
  • Soft fruits such as berries or bananas
  • Jell-O or other gelatin dessert cups
  • Pudding cups

When to Say “No, Thank You”

If you have to bite into it, if it’s chewy, or if it’s crunchy, it’s best to choose something else! Here are some common culprits when it comes to broken brackets and wires:

  • Caramel
  • Hard candy
  • Popcorn
  • Whole carrots
  • Whole apples
  • Hard rolls
  • Pizza
  • Corn on the cob

And remember to send your child to school with a brush and floss to clean teeth and braces after lunch. Dental hygiene is very important now, because brackets and wires can both trap food particles and make brushing them away more difficult. This can lead to increased plaque, cavities, and staining around the area of the braces. If it’s impossible to brush, be sure to remind your student to rinse thoroughly with water after eating.

Lunch hour should be a time to relax, get together with friends, and recharge for the rest of the school day. Talk to us about the most (and least) braces-friendly foods and recipes. By learning what foods to avoid and adjusting some old favorites, your school-age child can continue to enjoy healthy, tasty lunches. Most important, visiting Dr. Sal Carcara at our Westwood, NJ office for an emergency repair will not be on anyone’s list of afterschool activities!

Foods to avoid after a braces adjustment

Foods to avoid after a braces adjustment

In order to speed up your healing and relieve the soreness, you’ll want to stay away from hard and crunchy foods. It’s important to give your jaw and your teeth a rest from anything that will bother your mouth even more. Some of these foods can also bend or break your brackets. If that happens, you’ll need to take another trip to the orthodontist and you may even need to wear your braces even longer.

  • Crunchy foods – Chips, popcorn, pretzels, crunchy granola bars, raw veggies like carrots and broccoli, taco shells
  • Sticky foods – Anything with caramel, sticky granola bars, chewing gum, sticky candy like Tootsie Rolls
  • Hard foods – Hard breads, nuts, hard candy
  • Corn and the cob – Or any other foods that you bite into like apples
  • Gummy snacks – Fruit snacks, gummy candy
  • Chewy foods – Chewy breads, pizza crust, bagels, tough meats, beef jerky, slim jims, Starburst candy
  • Ice – No ice chewing (it causes your brackets to loosen). Don’t chew on your pen caps either!

Considerations for eating with braces

Regardless of what types of foods you eat with braces, it is important to keep the crevices between the teeth and around the braces very clean. That means brushing and flossing after meals to prevent the build-up of plaque and decay. Not only can failing to do so damage the teeth and gums, but it can also cause discolouration which can last a lifetime.

If you’re wanting to ensure the best results from your orthodontic treatment it is very important that you follow the advice about safe foods for braces that is set out above and ask your orthodontist if you have any questions about your specific treatment.

Care & Maintenance: “A Must During Treatment”

1. How to Brush with Braces

  • Brush thoroughly after each time you eat a meal or snack. If you cannot brush right away after a meal, be sure to rinse your mouth with water.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft, rounded-bristle toothbrush.
  • Braces wear out a toothbrushe quickly, so be sure to replace it as soon as it shows signs of wear.
  • Brush around all the parts of your braces and every surface of your teeth.
  • You’re doing a good job if your braces look clean and shiny, and you are able to see the edges of the brackets clearly. Fuzzy-looking or dull metal indicates poor brushing.

2. How to Floss with Braces

  • Floss every night before you go to bed
  • Use a floss threader. This reusable tool allows you to get dental floss underneath the wires easily.

3. Eating with Braces

There are a few dietary adjustments that need to be made in order to protect your new braces, and ensure that your treatment goes smoothly. But don’t worry, there are still many tasty foods that you can still eat!

Foods you CAN eat with braces:

  • Dairy – soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks, yogurts, cottage cheese, eggs
  • Breads – soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • Grains – pasta, soft cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry tender meats, meatballs, lunch meats
  • Seafood
  • Vegetables – mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, beans
  • Fruits – applesauce, bananas, fruit juice, smoothies, berries
  • Treats – ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, plain chocolates, peanut butter cups, brownies, soft cookies. But remember to always limit your intake on sugar!

Foods to avoid with braces:

  • Chewy foods – bagels, licorice, pizza crust, French breads
  • Crunchy foods – popcorn, chips, ice, hard candies including lollipops, thick pretzels
  • Sticky foods – caramel candies, chewing gum, gummy candies
  • Hard foods – nuts, hard candies
  • Foods that require biting into – corn on the cob, apples, carrots, ribs and chicken wings

Habits to avoid with braces:

  • Chewing on objects such as pens & ice cubes
  • Nail-biting
  • Smoking

Tips for Athletes & Musicians

You can still play sports during your treatment, but remember to protect your teeth with an orthodontic friendly mouth guard, just as you would normally. If you are involved in an accident during athletic activity, check your appliances and your mouth immediately. If the appliances appear damaged or the teeth loosened, schedule an appointment.

If you play an instrument, you may find it a little challenging to become adjusted to playing with your braces. It is normal to have some difficulty with proper lip position and sores can develop, too. Liberal use of wax and warm salt-water rinses will help your lips and cheeks toughen. Don’t shy away, practice makes perfect!

Quemaduras
